Types of Reflective Zipper Tape
Glass Bead Coating
A layer of microspheres (glass beads) is applied over a reflective base layer on the zipper tape surface. Retro-reflectivity: approximately 100–300 cd/lux/m². Adequate for recreational and fashion applications. Not suitable for claiming EN ISO 20471 compliance on its own.
After washing: glass bead coatings degrade over wash cycles. Most last 25–50 domestic wash cycles before retro-reflectivity falls below the initial value. Test wash durability for the specific product's expected care cycle.
Microprismatic Film Laminate
A thin film with an array of microscopic prisms is laminated to the zipper tape. Retro-reflectivity: 500–1,000+ cd/lux/m² — significantly higher than glass bead. Suitable for use in EN ISO 20471 area calculations when tested to the standard.
Wash durability is generally better than glass bead — microprismatic film laminates typically maintain performance through 50+ industrial wash cycles (EN ISO 15797 conditions) when bonded correctly to the tape substrate.
Specifying Reflective Zippers
When specifying for safety workwear or certified visibility garments, include:
- Minimum retro-reflectivity (cd/lux/m²) — specify both initial and post-wash requirements
- Number of domestic or industrial wash cycles after which performance must still meet minimum
- Width of reflective strip on the tape (wider strip = more visible from side angles)
- Whether EN ISO 20471 testing documentation is required from the supplier
For outdoor performance garments without formal certification requirements, the specification can be simpler: request the specific product number from your supplier's reflective range and test the visual performance under the intended use conditions.

Washing and Maintenance
Reflective coatings on zipper tape require some care to maintain performance:
- Machine wash at 40°C maximum (hot water accelerates bonding failure between the reflective film and tape)
- Do not tumble dry on high heat (heat degrades the bonding layer)
- Do not dry clean with solvent-based processes (perchloroethylene attacks the retroreflective layer)
- Store garments hanging rather than folded — fold lines at the zipper create stress fractures in microprismatic film over time
For industrial workwear with frequent washing, test the specific zipper through the full industrial wash cycle specified for the garment before confirming the specification.
Integration with Garment Construction
Reflective zipper tape is typically wider than standard zipper tape to accommodate the retroreflective strip. This affects seam allowances and tape turning at pocket edges. Check that your pattern allows for the wider tape before confirming the specification.
For garments with a weather flap over the main closure zipper, the reflective strip on the tape is hidden when the flap is closed. In this case, the reflective zipper contributes to visibility only when the garment is open. Decide whether this is the intended effect or whether the reflective strip should be on the flap face instead.
