Why Zipper Length Matters More Than You Think
Getting the zipper length wrong is one of the most common sourcing mistakes in garment production. A zipper that is too long creates bunching at the bottom of a jacket pocket. One that is too short forces the seamstress to stretch the seam, distorting the final product. In both cases, you end up with waste, rework, and unhappy clients.
This guide covers how to measure zipper length correctly for different zipper types, why standard length tables can mislead you, and how to communicate your requirements clearly when ordering from a supplier.
The Standard Definition: Tape Length vs Teeth Length
Most people assume zipper length means the total length of the zipper from top to bottom. That is the tape length — it includes the fabric tape above and below the teeth. The measurement that actually matters for production is the teeth length, sometimes called the chain length or working length.
Tape Length
Tape length is measured from the very top of the zipper tape to the very bottom. It includes:
- The fabric above the top stop
- The teeth area
- The fabric below the bottom stop
This measurement is rarely what the supplier quotes when you order a zipper.
Teeth Length (Chain Length)
Teeth length is measured from the top stop down to the bottom stop. This is the number you see in product specifications — a "20 cm zipper" has 20 cm of working teeth, not 20 cm of total tape.
When ordering, always clarify whether the quoted length refers to tape or teeth. Discrepancies of 2–4 cm are common when this is not specified.
How to Measure a Closed-End Zipper
A closed-end zipper has a fixed bottom stop that holds both sides of the zipper together. To measure it correctly:
- Lay the zipper flat on a hard surface.
- Close the zipper fully using the slider.
- Place your ruler at the top stop — the metal or plastic piece at the very top of the teeth.
- Measure down to the bottom stop — the piece at the bottom that prevents the slider from coming off.
- Record this number in millimetres for precision.
Do not measure from the edge of the tape. Do not measure with the zipper at an angle. Small measurement errors multiply across thousands of units.
For nylon zippers, the top and bottom stops are usually stitched or moulded — identify the actual stop, not just where the teeth end.
How to Measure an Open-End Zipper
An open-end zipper is used in jackets and outerwear — it separates completely at the bottom. Measuring it is slightly different:
- Open the zipper completely by disengaging the insertion pin from the retainer box.
- Lay one tape flat and straight.
- Measure from the top stop down to the bottom of the retainer box (not to the end of the tape).
- Record both sides separately if the zipper is two-way.
The retainer box and insertion pin assembly adds approximately 8–12 mm to the lower portion of the zipper. This is part of the functional length and must be included in the specification.

Standard Zipper Lengths and Production Tolerances
Most zipper manufacturers produce zippers in standard increments: 10 cm, 15 cm, 18 cm, 20 cm, 25 cm, 30 cm, 35 cm, 40 cm, 45 cm, 50 cm, 55 cm, 60 cm. Longer lengths are typically sold by the metre as zipper chain and cut to length.
Standard production tolerance is ±5 mm. If your seam allowances are tight, build in a buffer — do not spec a 20 cm zipper for a 20 cm opening.
Custom Lengths
If you need a non-standard length, most suppliers offer three options:
- Cut-to-length from chain (minimum order quantity applies)
- Pre-cut with finished stops (higher cost, longer lead time)
- Standard length with instruction to trim on-site (only practical for closed-end types)
Discuss which option fits your production workflow before confirming the order.
Measuring Invisible Zippers
Invisible zippers require a different approach because the coil is hidden when the zipper is closed. To measure:
- Turn the zipper face-down so you can see the coil on the back.
- Identify the top stitching line — this is your starting point, not the top of the tape.
- Measure from the stitching line to the bottom stop.
The opening length in the seam will be approximately 2–3 cm shorter than the teeth length because the slider stops before reaching the bottom stop. Account for this in your pattern.
Communicating Measurements to Your Supplier
When ordering zippers, always state:
- Measurement type (teeth length preferred)
- Unit (mm or cm — never mix)
- Tolerance acceptable
- Zipper type (open-end, closed-end, invisible, chain)
- Teeth size (e.g. #3, #5, #8)
A specification written as "YKK #5 nylon coil, closed-end, 25 cm teeth length ±3 mm" leaves no room for error on either side. Vague requests like "25 cm zipper" get interpreted differently by different suppliers.
Chain by the Metre: Cutting and Stop Placement
For production lines cutting from roll rather than ordering finished lengths: chain is sold per metre and measured in teeth length, not tape. Always cut longer than the final teeth length by at least 10 mm, then position and crimp stops at the correct point. Cutting short means the piece is scrap.
For high-volume lines, calibrate cutting jigs against a physical reference standard at the start of each run. Tape dimensions vary slightly with temperature and humidity — a 2 mm error at the cutting stage, repeated across a thousand pieces, is a thousand rejections.
Zipper length measurement is a small detail that causes large problems when handled carelessly. Teeth length is the operative number, not tape length. Always measure with the zipper closed and flat, from stop to stop. For production orders, specify your measurement standard in writing and agree on tolerances before samples are cut.
