Why Nylon Zippers Need Specific Care
Nylon zippers — also called coil zippers — are used in everything from lightweight windbreakers to hiking backpacks. Their coil-based construction makes them flexible and resistant to corrosion, but the same properties that make them useful also make them vulnerable to specific types of damage. High heat, chemical exposure, and mechanical stress can all shorten the life of a nylon zipper significantly.

Understanding Nylon Zipper Construction
Before getting into maintenance, it helps to understand what you are maintaining. A nylon coil zipper consists of:
- Nylon coil — a continuous spiral of moulded nylon stitched to a polyester or cotton tape
- Slider — typically zinc alloy or brass, occasionally plastic
- Tape — the fabric that attaches the zipper to the garment
- Top and bottom stops — small metal or plastic pieces that limit slider travel
The coil is the critical component. Nylon is thermoplastic — it softens at high temperatures and can permanently deform. It is also susceptible to UV degradation over time, and certain chemical cleaners accelerate this process.
Washing and Temperature Guidelines
Machine Washing
Nylon zippers tolerate machine washing well under the right conditions:
- Always close the zipper before washing. An open zipper allows the coil to catch on other items and distort under agitation.
- Use a laundry bag or turn the garment inside out to reduce abrasion on the coil and slider.
- Set the wash temperature to 40°C maximum. Higher temperatures cause the coil to lose shape.
- Avoid high spin cycles — centrifugal force at 1200+ RPM stresses the stitching that holds the coil to the tape.
Tumble Drying
This is where most zipper damage happens. Tumble drying at high heat (60°C+) deforms nylon coils and can cause the slider to skip. If tumble drying is required, use low heat only (below 40°C drum temperature). Air drying flat is the safest option.
Dry Cleaning
Some dry cleaning solvents, particularly perchloroethylene (PERC), can attack the lubricant coat on the nylon coil and degrade the stitching thread. If a garment requires dry cleaning, specify this to the supplier at sample stage — they may be able to substitute a dry-clean-resistant coil or recommend a different zipper type.
How to Lubricate a Sticking Zipper
A zipper that drags or skips is not necessarily broken — it usually just needs lubrication. Beeswax, a candle stub, or a commercial zipper wax stick applied directly to the coil is the most reliable option: open the zipper, run the wax along both sides, work the slider back and forth to distribute it. This holds through multiple wash cycles and is the standard fix on production floors. Silicone spray penetrates the coil faster and works well, but avoid WD-40 — it is a water displacer, not a lubricant, and it attracts dirt that accelerates coil wear. A dry soap bar is a quick temporary measure that washes out after the first laundry cycle and needs repeating. Whichever option you use, operate the slider through several full cycles before putting the garment back into use.
Dealing with Coil Damage
Flattened coil: if a section has been crushed flat, the slider jams at that point. Minor flattening can often be worked out by running the slider slowly back and forth while keeping the tape taut on both sides. Severe deformation across more than a third of the zipper's length is not repairable — replace the zipper.
Coil separation: visible as gaps in the stitching that holds the coil to the tape. When the thread has broken, lubrication and slider adjustment change nothing. This is end of life.
Slider wear: when the channel has worn loose, the coil passes through without interlocking and the zipper opens immediately under light tension after closing. Gently crimping the slider body with pliers tightens the channel — apply minimal force and test after each small adjustment. Overcrimping seizes the slider entirely.
Storage and Handling
For garments in long-term storage:
- Store zippers in the closed position to prevent coil distortion.
- Avoid folding or rolling garments with the zipper under a fold point — the constant pressure deforms the coil at that spot.
- UV exposure degrades nylon over time. Store items away from direct sunlight.
For bulk zipper stock in production environments, keep rolls away from heat sources and hold storage humidity below 65% to prevent tape mould. Nylon zippers stocked in poor conditions develop tape shrinkage that affects measurement accuracy when cutting.
Seasonal Garment Care
For garments stored between seasons — ski jackets, light summer rain shells — a brief maintenance routine before storage extends zipper life significantly:
- Clean the coil with a soft brush and mild soap solution to remove dust, sweat salt, and residue.
- Rinse with clean water and air dry completely before storing.
- Apply a light wax or silicone lubricant to the coil.
- Store with the zipper closed.
For jackets with waterproof zippers, the sealing membrane needs specific care — avoid flexing the zipper tape sharply during storage, which can crack the laminate at the fold point.
Recognising End of Life
No zipper lasts forever. Signs that a nylon zipper has reached end of life:
- Coil distortion across more than 30% of the length
- Coil stitching thread broken in multiple places
- Slider channel spread beyond crimpable range
- Repeated separation despite slider adjustment
Attempting to continue using a failed zipper increases the risk of complete separation in the field. Nylon zippers are durable when handled correctly and surprisingly short-lived when they are not. The two most common causes of premature failure are heat damage during washing or drying, and lack of lubrication leading to mechanical wear on the coil. Regular maintenance is fast and inexpensive — far cheaper than zipper replacement during production or after sale.
